Quality in commodity trading is not a claim a supplier makes about itself. It is a set of checks a buyer can specify, verify and enforce. This is how we approach it, and what we think buyers should expect from any counterparty.
The Specification Comes First
Most disputes we see are not arguments about price. They are arguments about what was agreed. A specification that names the grade but not the test method, or the size but not the count per carton, leaves room for two honest parties to reach different conclusions about the same container.
Before an order is confirmed we work through the specification in writing: product form and grade, origin, packaging down to carton and pallet configuration, net weight, expected shelf life, the inspection point, and the documentation that must travel with the goods. Where an attribute is judged rather than measured, we agree how it will be assessed and by whom.
Assessing a Supplier
Supplier assessment is mostly about evidence. The questions that matter are practical:
- Can they produce records? Harvest dates, lot identification, processing and storage records, and inspection paperwork.
- Do they meet their origin’s export requirements? Registration, licensing and inspection obligations vary by country and by season, and they change.
- Is the specification achievable for them? A supplier who agrees to every parameter without discussion has often not read them.
- What is their track record on timing? Loading dates, documentation turnaround and how they communicate a delay.
- How do they handle a problem? The response to a rejected lot tells you more than a facility tour.
Checks Before and During Shipment
Pre-shipment sampling, where the product and the contract allow it, is the cheapest quality control available. Approving a sample against the agreed specification before loading avoids arguments that are far more expensive to settle after arrival.
For perishable lines the cold chain is the quality control. Pre-cooling, temperature consistency in transit, calibrated logger records and a continuous data trail from packhouse to discharge decide the condition of fruit far more than anything done at destination. For shelf-stable products, the equivalent controls are moisture, foreign matter, packaging integrity and storage conditions, each with a stated test method and an agreed tolerance.
What We Do Not Claim
We think it is worth being explicit. BNO Trading is a B2B sourcing and commodity-trading business. We do not own farms, packhouses, warehouses at origin or vessels, and we are not an inspection body or a certification authority. We do not hold organic, fair-trade or sustainability certification, and we do not describe supply as certified unless the supplier holds a certificate that can be produced on request.
Where a buyer needs certified product, third-party inspection or a specific accreditation, we say so and arrange it through the parties qualified to provide it, rather than implying we can issue it ourselves.
Reliability Is Part of Quality
A container that meets specification but arrives three weeks late has still failed commercially. Realistic lead times, early notice of a slipped date, and a named contact who answers are part of the same product. We would rather quote a longer lead time we can meet than a shorter one we cannot.
